Old Lake Clifton Lime Works - Cache is in tuppaware container with a few goodies. Co-ords should have you standing next to POI.
W.A. Portland Cement Co. set up the limes works at Lake Clifton around 1921. The Lake Clifton Townsite (now completely gone - located just south of the Junction of Old Coast Rd and Old Bunbury Rd) was set up as the settlement for the works. There was also railway that ran to Waroona and joined the main line to Perth (Rivervale) along which the lime was transported.
Lime was pumped from the bottom of Lake Clifton and into settling ponds. The partially dried lime was then shoveled into open railway wagons for transport to what is now Rivervale. The kilns (shown in pictures) were employed at a later date to dry the lime and therefore reduce weight. The whole setup ceased in 1923 due to the poor quality of the lime and excessive transport costs.
For history of Waroona area read "Drakesbrook Days & Waroona Years" by Laurie Snell (Library No 994.12).
