We Came, We Saw, We Conkered ! Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Lactodorum: Hi, this looks suspiciously like the cache has gone. Could the owner please undertake a maintenance visit to check if it's there or not. In the meantime I'm archiving it but I'll happily unarchive it if/when it's found.

Thanks, Lactodorum

Geocache Description:

This cache may have been disturbed - awaiting further investigation

The cache is located at Southampton University Science Park, Chilworth, at a boundary between the formal gardens of Chilworth Manor and the Secondary Woodland of the Chilworth Conservation area.

The Cache is well hidden and is contained in a standard ammo box, the contents of which include a log book, self inking stamp, disposable camera and the usual selection of goodies.

I suggest that you park in the hotel overflow car park, as the main one gets busy, especially at weekends. Drive towards the hotel, and with the main entrance facing you, turn left and follow signs to exit. There is a further turning to the left next to some brick buildings which leads to the car park:-

N 50° 57.791' W 001° 25.422' (WGS 84)
SU 40569 18360 (British O.S.)

Whilst you are in the Vicinity you may enjoy exploring the Conservation area which is open to the public. It comprises of several distinct areas including Woodland Meadow, Grassland and a semi-formal Arboretum. The inclusion of a series of streams and ponds create a very varied habitat for many different species of fauna and flora, which can be seen throughout the year.

Please take care to minimise the impact you make on the environment as you enjoy the area. Remember 'Cache in, Trash out' and remove any rubbish you may find whilst walking around.

Areas of particular interest include: -

The Ecology Meadow, where many varieties of wild flowers, as well as rabbits, deer, butterflies, slowworms and grass snakes may be found. Sometimes (very occasionally) adders may be seen basking in the summer sun, especially near the corrugated metal sheets, which are scattered on the ground around the site.

The impressive twin concentric rings of mature conifer trees, which can be found just past the formal pond at the West end of the Manor gardens.

Finally the private area of the hi-tech satellite earth station, which can be seen from the roadway adjacent to the site boundary. This broadcasts commercial television pictures to satellites in geostationary orbit 36,000km above the earth, where the signals are re-transmitted back to earth for reception in the home.
