Historic location of Iowa's first school.
This site has Iowa's first school house, a one room, remarkably small school. It is hard to imagine how there could have been more than a teacher and a very few students in this structure. The schoolhouse is located about 8 miles north of Keokuk, Iowa, and is located very close to the Mississippi River. If you are there during the winter there is a good chance you will see some bald eagles flying the river. To claim this site, post or email me a picture of yourself (with GPS of course!) in front of the school. No camera, no sweat. There is a plaque mounted on a large rock in front of the school which has the year the school was built. Email this answer to me. Tell me how much the rock weighs and you win the bonus "Strongman of the Year" award! Please...just kidding....don't even think of trying!
