** THIS CACHE HAS BEEN RE-LOCATED **
The original cache site was too close to the prime campsite and as a result it "vanished". Thank you to Myra Mitt who put a new container in its place. The area is hard to get a good reading in because of heavy tree cover. A COMPASS SET TO THE PROPER DECLINATION WILL BE A GREAT HELP! See spoiler for more info.
The cache is located at the site of Hoegees Camp (1906 to 1936) which was something of a resort camp in the early part of the last century. From Chantry Flats you can take a loop which will take you across un-shaded blacktop, through shaded streamside glens and dry dusty trail. The site is now a popular place for new Boy Scouts to test their camping skills before tackling harder hikes elsewhere. Weekends will often find the area crawling with scouts, mountain bikers and day hikers. The new cache site is NO LONGER the large oak tree beside the stone chimney and so should be easier to find with out disturbing any backpacker who has claimed this prime camp site.
As of 26 May 2002 the cache contains:
A certificate for a free refreshment at the Chantry Flats Pack Station,
P-38 can opener,
2 AA batteries,
A signaling mirror,
5 details of the Hoegee's Loop (printed from Topo!),
a Boy Scout fundraising patch,
GPS tracking is tough due to the heavy foliage & steep canyon walls. Also NOTE: Forest Service Adventure Pass required for parking at Chantry Flats or $5.00 for parking at the Pack Station.
See MAP for more detail.
