Northern CA Solar System Model: Planet Earth Traditional Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

RedHiker: Hi, KCSearcher

Please read this entire message to keep your cache from being archived. Action is required on your part.

I see that your cache may need some attention. Although it may be missing or damaged, enough time has passed since it was successfully located that you should visit it. I'm going to disable it to remove it from the list of active caches.

As the cache owner of a disabled geocache, there are three options available for you:

  1. Visit your cache, verify any issues with it, then fix and enable your cache within the next 30 days. so that it can move out of this state of limbo.

  2. After visiting your cache, if you are not able to fix it in the next 30 days, then please create a new log note on your cache page letting the reviewer know you are aware that your cache needs attention and how/when you plan to take care of it. The reviewer will monitor and reply to these notes.

  3. You can archive your cache, remove your container, and clean up the area as needed.

Please note that Geocaching HQ has put greater emphasis on "refreshing the gameboard," which means that the volunteer Reviewers will be more actively following up to make sure caches are maintained or archiving them as needed to free up space for new caches to replace any old ones that were not being properly maintained.

If you take none of the actions listed above as the cache owner, this geocache will be archived by a volunteer reviewer.

Please note that geocaches that are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance are not eligible to be unarchived.

Geocache Description:

A cache representing the planet Earth, located approximately 2.56 miles from the heart of downtown San Jose.

This is the third cache in a series that creates a model of the Solar System across the Bay Area and the Central Valley of California.

We have placed the Sun at City Plaza Park in downtown San Jose, and have placed Mercury one mile from that location. All the other planets are placed in orbit at distances from San Jose that match the scale set with the planet Mercury. With this scale, Neptune is just a bit over 77 miles away, as the crow flies.

The cache log sheet contains a pair of numbers - labelled Comet Numbers. You should record these numbers - if you find all eight planets, your Comet Numbers will help you find the bonus Halley’s Comet cache. Note: The sum of the numbers will pinpoint an actual location, but the cache is not located there. An offset will be given on the Halley’s Comet page to take you to the actual cache. (The location determined by the sum of the Comet Numbers is fun to look at with a mapping program, but again, the Halley’s Comet cache is not there.)

The container itself is a round plastic object, about the size of a canister of shoe polish, or a snuff container, or a hockey puck. Bring a pencil to record your find on the log sheet! There isn't room for one in the cache container!

Please consider visiting the other caches in the Northern California Solar System Model. You’ll note that there are now other types of objects listed, as well as planets. These are a wonderful extension of the series that bthomas and shadow101 have built.

Mercury Venus Earth Mars
Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
Halley's Comet

You only need to find the eight planets to determine the location of the Halley’s Comet Cache, but finding the other objects as well is lots of fun!
