Tropical Treasures Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

antimony13: What a shame to have to archive this cache, as it's now been muggled twice this year. Well, it had a nice, long (4 1/2 year) life. Thanks to all who visited, and thanks to storypole for picking up the muggled pieces!!

Geocache Description:

This cache has been upgraded to a multicache. The first stop is located in Tropical Park in Miami, Florida. Here you will find the coordinates to your final destination, located a few minutes away by car. Bring your rollerblades, bicycles, tennis rackets, baseball bats, frisbees, and fishing poles and explore Tropical Park. Unfortunately, the dogs and other animals must stay at home, as they are not allowed inside the park boundaries.

When you get to the above posted coordinates, you will be at a memorial. You need to obtain the following information from the memorial in order to calculate the coordinates for the cache's final resting place. (You may want to bring a calculator).

A. What is the number of the month of dedication of the plaque (i.e., January = 1, February = 2, etc.)? ______ = A
B. How many total seals are engraved on the two benches to either side of the posted coordinates? _______ = B
C. Note the year of the dedication of the plaque. Now subtract the last digit from the third digit. ______ = C
D. What is the single day of the month the plaque was dedicated (i.e., if the plaque was dedicated on June 3, 1971, your answer would be 3)? ______ = D
E. Find the seal for Sweetwater. What is the sum of the last two numbers on that seal? _______ = E

Now, use these numbers to calculate the coordinates to the final resting place of the cache:
North coordinate:
Placing the answers for A and B next to each other gives you a four digit number. ______
Add this four digit number to the last 5 digits of the original North coordinate to get your final North coordinate:
N 25° __________

West coordinate:
Placing the answers for C, D, and E next to each other gives you a three digit number. ______
Subtract this three digit number from the last 5 digits of the original West coordinate to get your final West coordinate:
W 80° __________

Now, go find the actual cache!!!
Just a hint: the reason some people are finding their coords to be off by about 100 feet is that they are not obtaining the correct numbers for 'B'. The clue for 'B' states 'How many TOTAL seals are engraved on the TWO benches to EITHER side of the posted coordinates?' ... if you only count the seals on one side, you will end up being off by about 100 feet. Double check your math and the final coords are right on. Good Luck!

The original contents of the cache include:
Eight (yes, count 'em, 8) sea creature travel bugs, who are in a competition for caches, states, countries, and miles accumulated (see the tracking chart below):
1. Denny The Dolphin
2. Ollie The Orca
3. Otto The Octopus
4. Sally The Stingray
5. Sammy The Shark
6. Sandy The Seal
7. Terry The Turtle
8. Willy The Whale

Leaders in each category are highlighted in yellow

* Sally The Stingray, Sammy The Shark, and Willy The Whale have
gone missing. They have been placed in "unknown location"
status until they are relocated sometime in the future (hopefully).

Additionally, the following treasures are located within the cache:
a red plastic slinky
a blue mini-football
a red slide puzzle
a yellow smiley face yo-yo
a blue kazoo
a black plastic airplane
a yellow squirt gun
a purple plastic harmonica
a yellow smiley face labyrinth maze puzzle
a green puzzle watch
a packet of Calvin Klein Escape bath and shower gel
a Where's George dollar bill
and a log-book and pen

And .. as if that's not enough stuff in one cache ... there's also a camera for each cacher to take his or her photo -- just please remember to return the camera to a plastic baggie within the cache (to keep it dry!!) I will post the photos here once all the film is used.

Don't forget to sign the log book, rehide the cache (please make sure it is well hidden!), and have a blast at both of these great parks!

Update!!!: I have finally gotten the photos from the first camera in the cache uploaded!! Click here to see the photos, and let me know if you can identify any of the unknown cachers. Unfortunately, the second camera was returned to me by the photo developing company. The film was unable to be developed as it was ruined by water. Please ensure the cover to the cache is securely closed! Thanks!
