Geocache Description:

Shining Waters

High Falls, Eels Creek - This geocache will bring you to a beautiful set of waterfalls along Eels Creek called High Falls. The location of the geocache can be approached by land or water. Here are some details to help you plan your trip...

CANOE/KAYAK: In the summer we suggest canoeing down Eels Creek to High Falls. The 8 km trip begins where Eels Creek flows under the Highway 28 bridge just north of a town called Woodview and ends at the bridge on Northey's Bay Road just before Stoney Lake. We suggest hitting it in the spring when the water is high. There are five portages of varying difficulty on this mainly flatwater route. Portages range from 18 metres to 162 metres. Be sure to keep an ear out for the falls, that one is a portage for sure. The entire 8 km canoe trip is approximately a 5 hour paddle (or a leisurely 2 day trip).

HIKE: Petroglyphs Provincial Park, which is best known for its protection of the native rock carvings, also boasts four scenic hiking trails. One of which includes the 16 km High Falls Trail. The park is located 55 kilometres northeast of Peterborough off Northey's Bay Road (County Road 56), 11 kilometres from Hwy 28. In the summer your hike to High Falls from the Petroglyphs will take approximately 2 hours (or 4.5 hours round trip).
SNOWSHOE: In the winter, you can trek in from the bridge on Northey's Bay Road (County Road 56) just north of Stoney Lake. For this trek we recommend snowshoes but you may be able to hike it if the trail is packed down enough.
"For unrecorded generations, the Mississauga Indians occupied the lands we now call Central Ontario. They regarded the lands as the infinite gift of the Great Spirit. They named the lands "Kawartha" -- Shining Waters -- for the beauty of the glimmering lakes and of the river that connected them."

Up the creek...

Frozen Falls

Enjoy your day and be sure to give us all the details here in your log. As well, please take lots of pictures - we would love to update our site with some pics of the falls in all seasons.
