I didn't do my homework before I placed this cache. Didn't check to see if there was another cache in this area. I had the stuff with me and decided to place it this time. I had intended to place a cache here a couple of years ago but never made it. The least I can do is change the name from Grafton Ghost Town to Butch & Sundance.
This is on a dirt road that is passable in a car unless it has rain and then I wouldn't go down it for a few hours."
This is my second ghost town cache. Grafton was settled in 1859 orginally by Mormon pioneers on the south side of Rockville. Floods washed out the original settlement and it was moved 2 miles upstream.
Grafton was named for a city in Massachusetts. It became the 1st county seat for Kane County in 1864. In 1866 the Blackhawk War forced the residents to move to a nearby fort for protection. While the people were away another flood came and caused great damage to the town. By 1900 only 120 people remained. Today the old schoolhouse, church and cemetery (on the hill) are basically all that remain.
Even though it was abandoned, Grafton has been seen by millions. It was featured in the movie classic, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman.
The original cache is a 10" square plactic container. The contents are:
My signature smiley face antenna topper
A slap bracelet
Small picture frame
Whistle
Fishing key Chain
small glow in the dark alien
Logbook and pencil
Hope you enjoy this area as much as I do.
