Another reason to travel the historic Route 66 and take a quick detour off the main road is to enjoy a ¼ scale replica of the famous Hubble Space Telescope.
If you like off-beat side trips to get you away from the highway, this is a must see!
(The real Hubble Space Telescope is about the size of a school bus, and orbits Earth).
Who would have known that this incredible replica of the famous Hubble Space Telescope resides here, in the middle of nowhere, and is just a short detour off the main highway?
If you enjoy models, or if you like space exploration, then this is a must see. It's easy enough to find, but the real prize is being able to walk right up to it and admire the craftsmanship, and better yet, it's free! It's not just some junky model made out of tin cans and hub cabs. This is a real beauty made to look just like the one in orbit above Earth.
Edwin Hubble was one of the 20th century's outstanding astronomers. Hubble opened the world of galaxies for science when he showed that spiral nebulae beyond the Milky Way are galaxies extending to the limit of the universe and participating in a general expansion of the cosmos. The exploding universe of Hubble, now termed the Big Bang, determined the origin of the elements, of galaxies and of the stars.
Hubble was a native of Marshfield and spent some of his boyhood here. His exploits in the world of science led to the launching of the Hubble Space Telescope on April 25, 1990; on Space Shuttle mission STS-31, which is probing the very edge of space.
