Cache is about a 1.75 mile hike along a well defined trail except in winter when you will be creating your own trail through the deep snow (using cross country skis or snowshoes).
I have decided to place some virtual caches in the Desolation Wilderness area since physical caches are banned in wilderness areas and Desolation is the most visited wilderness area in the United States. This cache is the entrance to Desolation Wilderness via the Mt.Tallac trail. To get credit for this cache you are to take a photo of you or your GPSr in front of the wilderness sign. The hike to the sign takes you along a ridge with beautiful views of Fallen Leaf Lake and Mt. Tallac. This is a popular trail in the summer but in the winter be prepared for deep snow and you might have to create your own trail to the cache (good map skills will definitely be a plus). If you are feeling energetic, continue on the trail (except in winter) to the top of Mt. Tallac with breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe and Desolation Wilderness. If you continue on to Mt. Tallac, please make sure you have filled out a wilderness permit which is required in the wilderness area. You can pick up a permit at the trailhead and self register.
