An interesting historical site well illustrating the isolation of the early Otago Goldfields. Wonderful photographic opportunities everywhere. We'd love to make this a traditional cache but we live too far away to visit it often.
A 4WD is advisable but not essential. Turn off SH8 north of Cromwell and drive approximately 3km through vineyards to a sign saying Old Mine Workings. Then go upwards ;-) - take care on the steep, unfenced curves.
There are many other historical sites in this area, for example the site of the old schoolhouse, and other small towns.
