A tribute to times past, when the railroads made the west what it is today.
A quick trip off of south Brown road. There are roads that will get you to the cache from the east, (rough) or the north (car-able, along the power line road, except for the last 100 feet.)
As a kid, I can remember waiting at the Inyokern train station for packages to be delivered. About 20 years ago, Union Pacific quit using the rail lines northwest of Searles Station, (visit the Laws museum, just north of Bishop, for the whole history of the railroads in the area.) About ten years ago, the rails and ties were removed and sold as surplus, leaving the bare rail bed. The RR easement reverted to the BLM when it was abandoned.
The cache is located at one of the remnants of this rail system. The caching experience is best when the abandoned rail bed is used to access the cache. This route will allow you to drive to a spot less than three feet from the cache. (Watch the first step though, it’s a doozy) From the east, use N35° 32.094 W117° 42.991, or from the north, N35° 34.012 W117° 46.747 to climb aboard. Wide, traction tires, on an off road vehicle are recommended, but not required.
The cache is not in or near the trash that has been dumped at the site. I'll try and get the junk cleaned up.
