We have hidden this cache at the Willow Recreation Area located next to Willow Lake. The Loess Hills can be steep and the trail is sometimes muddy, but the view is worth the walk. We placed this cache in the winter, so I'm not sure if the difficulty will change in the spring.
The Willow Recreation Area is located next to Willow Lake, a 27-acre fishing lake. I was given permission to hide this cache by the Harrison County Conservation Board. This cache is in a standard green ammo box.
You can find this cache by parking next to the beach and walking across the bridge. Walk through the campgrounds, past the shelterhouse and the playground. The trail begins next to the modern shower house. If you have small children, you may want to take a restroom break first.
My family enjoys the prairie and woodland trails and the camping cabins. The camping cabins are very cute. Three small cabins are located up the hill from the playground. A large housekeeping cabin (White Pine cabin)is on the other side of the lake in a pine forest. We have stayed in them in the winter and in the summer.
Pack a lunch and make a day of it at the swimming beach (in the summer), hiking trails, picnic shelter houses, and a playground. This park is a convenient get-away in the heart of the Loess Hills.
As you walk the trail, you may decide which trail to take- Redtail Ridge Trail or Cricket Creek Trail. Both trails have an abundance of animal life and tracks. In the spring, you will enjoy listening to the song of birds and toads. Wild flowers are also sprinkled along the way and you may find a morel or two.
The Redtail Ridge Trail takes you to the top of our beautiful Loess Hills to see the breathtaking Willow Lake Valley below. You may want to bring a camera. Those who are familiar with the area know that loess soil is loose windblown soil that is only this thick in China. My children love to look for "kindchens" which are special rocks that only form in loess soil. Kindchen comes from the German word that means little children. Cricket Creek Trail takes you through a small timber next to a small creek. The cache is only slightly off the trail and hidden behind a large tree.
