This cache is a camo film canister placed in a small Pleasanton city park next to a retirement community.
The stocky Passerella iliaca or Fox Sparrow is one of my favorite winter backyard bird visitors.
Both the Fox Sparrow's common name and the Latin-specific epithet "iliaca" refer to the "foxy" rufous red color of eastern and northern Fox Sparrows. Fox Sparrows that inhabit Pacific Coast regions are predominantly dark brown on the back and wings with brown spots on the chest and belly.
We are likely to see Fox Sparrows only during migration or in winter because they nest in northern and western Canada and in mountainous areas in the western states.
This micro cache contains only a log sheet. Bring your own pen or pencil. Please step lightly when retrieving the cache and return it to its original hiding place.
NOTE: New container and log placed 10/30/06. Placed a few feet south of coordinates so that seekers will not have to get wet feet. A long reach should do it.
