Geocache Description:

The terrain is steep and with the fire of 2003 that burned right through here, much more rock has been broken off causing quite a bit more scree that you'll be climbing up. In places, it's like climbing up marbles so be very careful! And, yes I would consider this kind of a dangerous hike, but a trek that teenagers, youngsters, and old alike have been making for well over 50 years--enjoy!!

REFER TO DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS Balancing Act FOR AN "EASIER" ROUTE THAN SCRAMBLING UP/DOWN THE ROCK SCREE THAT'S ABOVE PATSY'S MINE. If you use Balancing Act route instructions, make sure you look at the rest of this page for the multi details.

This location is fondly known to the locals as FLAG ROCK.

First off, I'd like to thank MeticulousMike for originally placing this cache. I wished I had his original cache description to put here. During Mike's hiatus from geocaching, I've had the opportunity to adopt and take care of this cache. The cache was brought off the hill right after the fire, returned to Mike, and then brought back to me to replace it when the time was right and that time has come.

Mike originally placed this cache after his visit to this cache: In Honor of Sept 11th 2001 I was honored to have Mike place this cache after visiting my 9/11 virtual cache.

Don't not make a beeline to the cache; I'm sure you'll realize in a hurry that's a big mistake.
Here's basic guidance for starting your trek up the hill:

Park: 40 58.897N; 111 52.775W
This may seem like a weird place since there's a new subdivision going in; however, the owner of this property that's having it developed is guaranteeing access to the trail through the area. So, don't be overly concerned. Just park along the road out of the way of construction vehicles.
Trail beginning: 40 58.915N; 111 52.715W
Follow this trail up the gulley and it eventually takes you to what the locals call, the firebreak or pipeline road.
Trail from firebreak road--there's actually two:
40 58.923N; 111 52.586W This trail is immediately across the firebreak road where you come up on the road from the trail below.
40 58.987N; 111 52.603W Either one of these trails will get you to the main trail up above.
Approximate intersection with the main trail:
40 59.055N; 111 52.389W Just follow the trail up the rest of the way to the mine.
Everyone has referred to the mine as, the mine. It is known as Patsy's Mine. There's a Twin that's to the north in the rock area below the flag. It's nowhere near the length of Patsy's.
It is really important to follow one of these two trails from the firebreak road to Patsy's. The hillside is very fragile--the deer even do quite a bit of damage when it's really wet. Please practice cache in trash out. As previous visitors probably saw, a lot of people actually hike up here and leave a bit of garbage up here.

Once you get to Patsy's Mine (and bring flashflights to explore the mine), just follow the trail up to Patsy's camp and it will take you across the canyon just above the mine.

Please stop by the 9/11 virtual below coming up so you can get the whole effect of this cache. Enjoy the hike and probably best to start early in the morning before it gets too hot. Cache on!!
