This public area was formally the site of a Ford Motor Company
assemby plant. When production began in 1955, this plant played an
important role in the growth and development of the automobile
industry in the post World War II era. The plant assembled a wide
variety of Ford vehicles, including the Mustang, Falcon, Fairlane,
Pinto, Escort, and F-Series pickup trucks. It also produced the
short-lived Edsel in the late 1950's.
The plant covered nearly two million square feet. During the
peak production years in the 1960's and 1970's, the plant employed
as many as 5,000 employees on two shifts, assembling 1,000 cars and
trucks daily. In 1983, the plant was closed.
Historical transportation exhibits and some vintage automobiles
can be seen throughout the nearby public building.
