Geocache Description:

Hike or bike to Towell Falls, the highlight of your visit to the Escure Ranch.

The Escure Ranch, often confused with the likes of Knotts Berry Farm, Epcot Center, or Six Flags over Texas, became public property a couple of years ago as part of a land swap. It contains all the old ranch buildings, hundreds of archaeological features if you know where to look. Rock Creek bisects the ranch, and Towell Falls is located on the southern end of the property. Park at N47.00.849 W117.56.629. A dirt road leaves the parking area heading south. The road/trail winds around and up and down, but will lead you directly to the falls. When you arrive in the vicinity of the falls you will be able to see stone walls that go around the tops of the taller basalt outcroppings. These are similar to the walls and rockpiles - called cairns- that are common on all the mesa tops in this area. These stoneworks, in some cases, predate the arrival of Europeans in the area. Anthropologists disagree as to the purpose of these walls, but modern day hunters seem to build hunting blinds that follow the same principles, so you can guess what I believe. Use caution if you decide to swim or wade in the creek. The basalt is extremely slippery, and the creek flows quickly. Please heed the warning signs at the trailhead. In fact, the largest rattlesnake I have ever seen in the northwest was a couple of years ago between the trailhead sign and the bridge. The cache container is not politically correct, but I don't believe anyone will think I am trying to blow up the falls. tpulliam recommends trying the following coordinates: N 46.59.044 W 117.55.911
