Geocache Description:

There are two diffenent ways to approch this cache located on top of Otay Mountain at 3405 ft.

From Otay Lakes Road: Turn into the Pio Pico 1000 Trails Campground south parking lot. In the northwest corner there is a road that heads up the mountain. Take this road up until it meet the Otay Truck Trail at the top

From Marron Valley: Take Highway 94 to Marron Valley Road. Go south until you see a directional sign telling you that Doghouse Junction is to the East. Follow the Otay Truck Trail to the cache site.

View from Otay Mountain

The views along the way are magnificent. If you have the time, I would suggest going down the opposite way you came up. Both sides have awesome views of different parts of San Diego County.

From the cache site you will be looking down into Copper Canyon. The largest and maybe the steepest canyon on Otay Mountain. The international boundary is at the very bottom of the canyon. From various pull outs along the way you can see the ocean and even downtown San Diego. On a clear day from the right spot you can even see the Mormon Temple in La Jolla.

If you continue west, stop at the square cement building and walk out to the northwest. Here you will find two WWII bunkers that were used to watch the ocean for incoming enemy ships and planes.

If you come up from Marron Valley, you can take the northern road at Doghouse Junction and find a small memorial site where an airplane crashed in the 80s. Somebody told me it was carrying Reba McEntire's husband, but I don't know if that is accurate. If you come up from Lakes, you will pass it along the way.

No matter which way you go, go slow and be careful around the blind corners. It is a narrow road that is frequented by Border Patrol Vehicles 24 hours a day, as well as bicycles, joggers, and dirt bikes during the weekends.

Be Safe and Have Fun .
