How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

A short distance from Quartzsite, AZ, you'll need at least a high clearance vehicle to get through the washes. 4 wheel drive recommended. The cache itself can easily be walked to, but it is a long, long hike from town. Please park on the EAST SIDE of the road and walk to the cache. Please do not drive West of the road into the Company "B" area, but feel free to walk about and see where these soldiers camped during the training of Patton's army.

PLEASE NOTE: This cache is up for adoption. I placed it over 15 years ago and I now live in Colorado and rarely travel or geocache anymore. From the logs, it sounds like people have cared for it well since 2003, so it shouldn't be much work to continue to care for it. If you're a regular geocaching Quartzsiter, please consider! Thanks, and thanks to all the cachers who've visited it and left it in good condition. If you're interested in adopting it, please reply in the log and we'll figure it out from there.

THE CACHE IS A CAMO AMMO BOX

WWII Bivouac sites: These sites are managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The sites are West of the road. The cache is East of the road.

Please help preserve these sites!

Thank you for not riding or driving vehicles onto the sites!

Thank you for not moving rocks or in any way changing the sites.

Thank you for not removing anything at all from the sites, and of course, not leaving anything at the sites, garbage or otherwise. Metal detectors are not allowed in these areas. These are BLM rules

If you know any history of the nearby bivouac sites of Companies “A”, “B”, and “D”, please let us know in the log book and please log your visit and knowledge on-line at: (visit link)

Contacting the BLM site manager and sharing your knowledge would also be appreciated.

Do you know any veterans that trained here in this desert during WWII? If so, ask them about their experiences training here. What were the conditions like? What dates were they here? What was the food like? Was water rationed? How long were these sites occupied? What division and company were they attached to?

In some of the areas that seem to be rank-and-file tent areas, there are some small areas that were sort of “paved” with flat rocks. Were those the “showers” or kitchens or what?

Approximate coordinates for some of the "bivouac sites":
N 33 40.853 W 114 07.967 (Battalion HQ? - Large circle)
N 33 41.080 W 114 07.921 ("A" Company)
N 33 41.397 W 114 07.778 ("B" Company)
"D" Company is farther North. See if you can find it!

And last but not least… What the heck happened to Company “C”?
