The cache is located in a secluded and undeveloped section of White Oak Park. The majority of the hike will take you through a scenic Hollow where you will wind your way along a babbling tributary of Jacks Run creek. This is a very pretty area with the high hills surrounding the hollow that shut out any sense of the surrounding suburbia.
The initial portion of the hike will be relatively flat although you may need to cross the creek a time or two. This can be done strategically to avoid wet feet. For the final portion of the hike, you will need to climb the hill side (easier if you walk to the fork and cut back). Proceed in a manner that is safe and consistent with your ability or your party’s ability.
You can park at a pull off area on McClintock Rd at N40° 20.690 W79° 47.405. This is also the point to begin your hike. Alternatively, you can park at the Chestnut playground down the street; however, you will need to walk along McClintock road which does not have sidewalks. (The perimeter of White Oak park is posted with No Hunting or Trapping signs. I did confirm with park management that this area is open to pedestrians).
The cache is located in an ammo box.
Footnote: White Oak Park is part of the Allegheny County Park system. In addition to the standard shelters and playgrounds, the park is also home to the Angora Gardens. Angora Gardens is a working farm that features a greenhouse, a vegetable garden, angora rabbits and a Victorian farmhouse.
