This cache is located just off Hwy. 199, south of Cave Junction.
From the Highway, this area doesn't look very impressive. In fact, it is so stark and desolate that the Smokejumpers, who at one time trained nearby nicknamed this it the "Gobi Desert". However, the area actually consists of a unique serpentine soil meadow which hosts a variety of rare plants that are native to the Siskiyou Mountains. All during the spring, a profusion of unusual wildflowers bloom. Spend some time poking around, close to the ground, especially in spring, and you will be amazed and delighted to see what manages to bloom in this harsh soil, which is toxic to most other plants. Visit often, if possible, because every few weeks, the variety changes.
Bordering the south side of this area is the crystal clear stream known as Rough and Ready Creek, which can rise and fall dramatically during winter. It runs mostly underground throughout the summer, but a few great swimming holes almost always remain.
There is a good parking area right off Hwy. 199.
The cache is filled with items pertaining to flowers. If you are so inclined, keep the flower theme going.
There is a First Finder's Award for the earliest wanna-be botanist.
