This park was always fun place for me to go to when I was a kid. The nearest traditional cache is 24 miles away, so I figured I'd put one here to fill in the void. This is a very small park, but contains a lot of history concerning the Confederacy. The terrain is very easy to walk (Mostly gravel trails). Visit the museum before you hit the trails so you can see what the park is all about.
This is a three part cache, and can be completed in an hour if you go steady at it. However, it is my hope that you will spend time at the park and enjoy as I always have. It's a nice quiet place way out in the country, so you can enjoy God's creation without the disturbance of many vehicles and other 'city' noises.
The park is the site of Alabama's only Confederate veterans home, which was in operation from 1902 - 1939. It consists of two cemeteries where more than 300 residents of the veteran's home are buried. The first cemetery, located in the park, has a very nice view from it. The home is no longer there, but the park has historic structures such as an old Post Office/General Store, an old church building, and other log structures. The nature trails have old water wells for visitors to view. These wells are not your typical water wells, as they are large, open, brick tanks. In the largest tank, you can see massive tadpoles floating on the surface. The signs along the trails give information regarding many of the sites. It's also the location of Alabama's second largest Yellow Poplar tree (Located at one of the trail entrances).
This park is a great place for kids to romp and play as there is very little traffic (especially during the week), and the people who often visit the park are other parents with small children. Many children bring their bikes with them to ride around on. It's a great picnic spot as well. Pets are allowed (My lab, Dixie, spent the whole day there with me), but are required to be on a leash. I hope you enjoy it as much as I always have!
I've tried to conceal these caches as best I could without making them unseeable. Please help conceal them once you place it back.
