Geocache Description:

Remains of Roman Bridge over River Tees

Piercebridge is a village built on the site of a Roman Fort, part of which has been excavated, and is well worth a visit.

Nearby is the site of the bridge which carried the Roman Road from York over the River Tees. After locating the cache, continue along the path for 1/4 mile to see the remains of the bridge. The course of the river has changed over the past 2000 years, so that the bridge site is now some way south of the river. It was uncovered some years ago during gravel extraction.

The nearby George Hotel has a good reputation, and it also claims to have the original 'Grandfather's Clock' of the old song.
