In a semi swampy area but on a natural sand spit between the Rondout and Hudson Rivers.
This area is in the Town of Esopus Sleightsburg Spit Park which is free to the public. There is a main trail that goes right out to the spit. It is not required to cross the tidal area between the the two ends of the sand spit in order to find the cache. In fact you should only cross the tidal flat in low tide and do not spend to much time on the end of the spit that juts into the Hudson River else you get stuck out there when the tide rises and may get caught in a dangerous rip tide. Like I said you do not need to cross the tidal area in order to find the cache. MapQuest and Delorme maps show the cache in the water which is false when it is really on land in the west end of this split sand spit. Perhaps the sand spit has moved since the mapping has been done. The town I live in Esopus is planning to build a bridge over the tidal area later this year so hopefully anyone can cross anytime they want to in the future. To get to this park just go to Port Ewen, RT 9W, turn left or right, at the light, (towards the River) on to North Broadway. Follow North Broadway to First Av., turn right, (there is a little white sign on the pole saying Launch ramp) turn left to Everson St. (another sign on pole) just before the fuel depot, and turn right into the park. There are beautiful views of the Hudson River in the park and plus your walking along one of the largest natural sand spits that jut into the Hudson River. The cache is in a large Ammo can. We left in this cache a new mini glue gun, magnetic clip, magnifying lens, misc. toys and the Travel Bug COCKY. My seven year old son Hans thought up the name for this cache, sounds like some new kind of Ben & Jerry ice cream to me.
