Geocache Description:

Swamp Fire was the first cache in placed in Newport News Park, the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi. A copy of the park map can be downloaded here. Be prepared for a round trip of at least 2 miles.

Newport News Parks Permit #202

Newport News Park offers a multitude of activities for the family with miles of hiking trails, biking trails, arboretum, Discovery Center and more. The shortest trail to the cache will take you through the swamp where you are likely to spot water fowl and other wildlife (we saw two pileated woodpeckers on the way to the site!). Depending on the trail you choose, you will also see evidence of beavers at work as well as Confederates at work (old Confederate earthworks). No need to walk over any earthworks to get to the cache - please don't!

This cache is a regular ammo box. You may choose from many trails to get to the location, depending on how far you want to hike. Closest parking is near the Discovery Center. Difficulty may increase as vegetation begins growing. This area will definitely be teeming with mosquitos by the time summer comes around so don't forget the bug spray.

Cache was replaced on 11/14/04 after the trails finally opened back up after Hurricane Isabel hit in 2003.

Please help keep this geocache going by closing the lid securely and sealing the zip lock bag. We don't want water to ruin the fun again!
