Geocache Description:

Lookout Point, elevation 3297 feet.

A nice, if rather difficult, companion piece to Bud Ugly's Orchard Camp Cache 2. For credit: 1) You MUST post a photo of yourself here on the summit with Mt Wilson in the background. Once there was a trail to Lookout Point from popular Orchard Camp. It is now abandoned and overgrown. Sierra Madre trailbuilders plan to restore it. Friends and I scouted the route for them. It was fun to do so with a fellow that could recall Orchard's heyday from his childhood. If and when the path is rebuilt, I'll bump down the terrain rating. At present, there is no easy way. A rock cairn (sign-in register is gone) resides in the clearing atop the summit. This is a serious undertaking. Caution the customary objective hazards of route-finding, bushwhacking, steep slopes, loose rock and rattlesnakes. Live the adventure! See "Sierra Madre's Old Mount Wilson Trail," by John W. Robinson for an excellent historical account of the area. Personal beta on two approaches. 1) The route from Orchard Camp. Faint but discernible for a couple hundred yards, it then disappears in a wall of brush. You may wend and crawl your way through and along the ridge. Not really recommended. 2) The drainage west of Lookout Point. Accessible by departing the Mt Wilson Trail at Decker Spring. You must cross the main creek which is quite pretty, circumvent a large waterfall and negotiate smaller falls (usually dry) in the gully before gaining the summit ridge. Strenuous, but nontechnical. 1/19/08 Note: Our 5/02/02 register and Kevin's note are no more, but the old tin remains. I have complemented the virtual with a small physical cache nearby, offset and situated discreetly forty feet due south of the cairn (the posted coordinates are for the virtual at the summit cairn).
