This is a wonderful park with many amenities, including
bird-watching, native tree arboretum, butterfly garden, fire
circle, nearby fishing canal, canoe rentals, nature trails and
guided tours, picnic shelters, playground, and restrooms. There is
also a live indoor exhibit of reptiles and amphibians and a new
freshwater exhibit. It is the Observatory site for the Southern
Cross Astronomical Society which conducts free star-watching
programs with telescopes, lectures and slide shows.
This park was originally opened to the public as Old Cutler
Hammock Nature Center but was renamed in 1992 in honor of a South
Florida civic leader and environmentalist who was killed in a plane
crash. I will leave it up to you to find out who this special park
is named after.
