Geocache Description:

An easy Bushrat 'Believe it or not' history cache

The Hungry Hole is a mysterious shaft, now covered, that was rediscovered in 1978 when police were looking for a missing Northern Beaches girl. Police divers struck water at 13 metres and then went a further 20 metres to a point where timbers blocked entry to a deeper shaft. Because of the danger, a local contractor was called in and poured 150 tonnes of soil into the hole, which showed no signs of filling. A local came forward and said that the hole was dug in the 1880s by a German businessman who used to run the nearby powderworks. Deep down there is supposed to be a side tunnel 8 km long that opens into Careel Bay. The powderworks apparently used to drop barrels of gunpowder into the shaft so that they would be transported by the tide to Careel Bay for loading on to a boat. Another version of the story is that the tunnel led to the sea below Bungan Head. The German was also supposed to have a secret explosives laboratory that in 1978 was reported to be still standing at the head of the valley on private land. The original stone powderworks house is still standing in Manor Road.
