This cache is placed close to the remnants of two igloo-shaped, stone built, bread ovens. These ovens provided bread for the workers laying the adjoining railroad. I guess that even if the workers didn’t make much salary they did make a lot of dough! (Sorry couldn’t help that corny one!) The rails to Cranbrook were completed in 1898. The rails and ties were removed in 1971 due to the construction and flooding of Lake Koocanusa. This railbed now forms part of the Trans-Canada Trail System.
The cache is placed just off part of the Trans-Canada Trail and as such can be reached on foot from many places in Canada! I would suggest, however, that you park in the parking spot 3.3 km northeast of Cranbrook city limits on highway 95/3 at N49 33.587 W115 42.157. From here head down a short hill to the disused railway bed. Plan on 2.2 km of easy walking to the cache site. On the way enjoy the scenery especially as you go through Isadore Canyon. This trail is dog and bicycle friendly. Continue along the railbed until a few metres before reaching the 6km sign. At this point head through the steel gate on the left and the remnants of the ovens are close to the brow of the hill at the edge of the bush. The cache site is now fairly close.
The cache is in a flat Tupperware container and contains:- A CPR whistle, a happy face watch, a gold heart pin, a 12 hour lightstick, some RCMP collectible cards, some Sea Monster Cards, a small Scottie and pad with pencils.
