Geocache Description:

Park at Monte Cassino Shrine. The trek is short but steep in places. God's Country number 1

This small chapel and shrine is named after Monte Casino Abbey in Italy where Saint Benedict of Nursia founded the first Christian monestary in the 5th century. The monks of Saint Meinrad, across the valley from here, are Benedictine. They follow the rules for monastic living that were originally set forth by Benedict of Nursia

On Sundays in May and October, large crowds gather here at Monte Casino for a public pilgrimage. Geocaching visits on those Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 would not be a good idea. The cache is hidded in the area that was a sandstone quarry in the late 19th century. The stone for the shrine and the oldest of the Archabbey buildings was quarried here.

You can find more about the interesting history of shrine by looking here http//www.saintmeinrad.edu/abbey/shrine.htm

When you visit Monte Casino feel free to go into the chapel. You may want to light a candle and say a prayer to Saint Jude, the patron saint of Geocaching. In keeping with the sacred nature of this site, all of the original contents of this cache are inspirational items.

You really need to make your find on a Sunday afternoon in May or October between 1:00 and 4:00? You are welcome to the prayer service, but if you just want to find the cache, try parking at this spot 38.10.758N 086.48.382W and walk in. There is no fee to enter this shirne and all are welcome, but thre is a gate that is sometimes closed late at night.
