On May 29, 1949, Abbot Ignatius Esser, O.S.B led a procession of 3,000 pilgrims from Saint Meinrad Archabbey, across the valley for the dedication of this shrine. The statue was carved from oak by Brother Herman Zwerger and it weighs about 1,400 pounds. The sandstone for the grotto comes from the Abbey Sandstone Quarry.
Saint Joseph is the patron saint of workers. He is symbolic of the working person. He is the everyday hard working man or woman who is always ready to do what is expected of them and more, and when called upon to do great things, is ready and willing to do their best.
Saint Joseph was a carpenter, so all of the original contents of the cache are solid wood items. It is in a medium ammo box. The hillside is steep and of course there are briars and ticks--the life of the working person is never easy.
