Note: The coordinates above are for the information you'll need to claim this virtual cache. The gate to the park is at N 38° 59.694' W077° 18.852'. The two are close, about a thousand feet or so -- you can see it in the original photograph of the historical marker -- but not adjacent, so I thought I'd warn you in advance.
This park was originally the integrated fire control (IFC) area for W-83, one of thirteen Nike anti-aircraft missile sites surrounding Washington, DC and Baltimore. The target acquisition and tracking radars were located here; the missiles and their launchers were about a mile to the southwest, off of Utterback Store Road.
W-83 was active from 1954 to 1962. All that remains today are a couple of structures, the original purposes of which I haven't yet been able to determine. The gate to the park was padlocked the day I was there (which is why the pictures were all shot through the chain link fence), but a friend of mine who lives nearby tells me that the park is now open to the public.
To claim this virtual cache, email to me the year listed at the bottom of the historical marker, after the words "Department of Historic Resources". Do not post the answer here, even if encrypted.
