A cache with links to our heritage and in memory of one of my ancestors.

Richard was a Timbergetter in the Pennant Hills area. He arrived on our
shores as an 18 year old on March 16 1795 per General Hewitt and was assigned to
John Blaxland where he remained until after 1819. He received a ticket of leave
and set himself up as a sawyer in the Pennant Hills area where he eventually
built 5 sawpits. He purchased 30 acres of land in a Government Auction on 14
August 1839 for the princely sum of 60 pounds. At the time of his death he had 8
farms totalling 260 acres surrounding this purchase on the North, East and
Western sides. Baulkham Hills council has dedicated two reserves to his
name. At this stage, neither of these appears to be on his land although they are in an area he
worked.
This cache will take you to one of the reserves dedicated to my
GGGGrandfather and to his 30 acre land purchase. If you have time, the track
past the waypoint leads to an enjoyable walk along the valley floor where there
are surviving examples of Ironbark, Red Mahogany, Blackbutt and Blue Gum, the
main trees cut by the timbergetters..
You will need these coordinates S33 45.218, E151 1.281 and a little bit of
math.
At the waypoint for this cache there is a sign with information about some
living creatures. You need to count the number of flying creatures in the
picture on the sign, multiply it by 10 and then subtract from the decimal
portion of the minutes for both latitude and longitude to arrive at the cache
location. This location is about the centre of Richard’s land purchase.
From one of the entrance points there are yellow arrows painted on the rocks,
these lead through public land. You should be able to make out the property line
to the house next door.
The cache is a 750 ml Blue container so keep the swaps small please. |
