Griffen Rock is our unofficial name for a conspicuous formation near the end of the Piedras Grandes road in southern Anza Borrego Desert State Park. It is a short hike up the hill to the cache area, where there are great views of the east side canyons of the Jacumba Mountains. Our newest cache was inspired by a fine day of cross-country hiking in the area. The trailhead is a good starting point to reach the seldom-visited Jacumba 3446 cache (GC250F).
Access to the Mortero Palms and Piedras Grandes areas starts from highway S2. With caution, most cars can navigate the Dos Cabezas Road, starting at the signed junction at N 32 45.226, W 116 02.929. Alternatively, you can come in the more direct Mortero Canyon route if you have a high clearance or preferably a 4WD vehicle. To reach the trailhead, you may prefer to hike or at least have a high clearance vehicle due to a couple of short rocky sections on the Piedras Grandes road.
The cache container is a standard NATO ammo box. Its placement is offset to the east of Griffin Rock by a hundred or so feet for safety reasons and to keep the difficulty rating within reach of families.
