Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Dixie Crew's first traditional cache (huzza!), and what a gorgeous location! Located at about 2,200 ft elev. in Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest just yards off of a well-packed trail. You'll have the opportunity to to walk along a boardwalk next to a tumbling mountain stream and small waterfall. Parking coordinates are: N36 13.515, W81 17.558
Access the cache by taking the "Talking Tree Trail" which begins near the main parking area. The official map of the trail is misleading, as I found several spurs and branches off of the main loop. You may want to take the same route I did and take the first spur trail off to the right, which goes downhill toward the stream. I attempted to place the cache in an area which would not be sensitive to foot traffic, like the watershed area would be. But please be careful not to trample any mountain laurel or other plants.
This park is regulary visited by school children from 11 surrounding counties, you may want to bring yours along too.
Some caveats:
- The park is not open year-round. Typically it is open beginning on the third Tuesday in March until the day after Thanksgiving. I suggest you verify if you are planning an outing near either date. The park is closed on Mondays. (thanks Eswau)
- Access to the cache is easy, but you will be in the woods. There could be hazards ranging from mosquitoes to poisonous snakes. Use good common sense.
