Geocache Description:

This is located in a civil war battle field on top of Rich mountian.

This cache is at a battle field that was a major turning point in the civil war. I wanted to put a regular cache here and didn't think there would be any problem since there has been strip mining, logging, and hunting permitted here, but the Rich mountian battle field foundation did not want that.

To get to this site, you can take US 250 South from Elkins to Beverly. Once in Beverly, fallow the signs to Rich Mountian Battle field. Once there, they have a marked parking area.

The Hart house once stood near this point and the Hart family were strong supporters of the Union Army. The family fled when confederate forces took the house and set up positions to control the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike. David Hart, the grandson of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, led the Union army up the mountian to attack the confederate position. Fighting lasted for four hours when the Union finally charged and overtook the single cannon.

This was a very important location to me because my GGG-grandfather was stationed near here in Beverly. He was a corpral with the 7th WV Cavalry, at that time they were the 8th Virginia mounted infantry. This was a union regiment under the command of General William Averell.

To get credit for this find, you must answer these two questions and email them to me. Please do not post answers here online.

1.) At the coordinates above there is an information sign with a couple of pictures on it. What is the name of the soldier who's name is carved into the rock in the picture?

2.) What structure from the Hart Farm was nearest to these coordinates?
