This cache is in the Tollgate Wetlands in Lansing. It's a nice nature area, which also is a
natural water-cleansing area. The street water runoff flows over limestone, which neutralizes
the acids in the water, as well as oxygenates the water, which helps break down pollutants and
allows microorganisms to grow. The water then flows through a series of ponds, which allows the
sediments in the water to settle to the bottom. These sediments are then filtered by the peat
at the bottom of the ponds, removing harmful chemicals such as phosphates. The water can then be
used to irrigate the nearby golf course and residents' lawns.
This area also attracts a variety of wildlife and plants. There is a paved trail approximately
1/2 mile that goes around the perimeter of the wetlands. You can see these varied plants and
animals at all times of the day. There are a few spots that have more information on what plants
and animals can be found in the area.
The cache is a medium-sized Rubbermaid container, which is clear with a white lid. Please try to hide it as best as possible when you replace it due to the large number of walkers in this park. This is a high traffic area, especially in the summer. The cache isn't too far off the trail, so be careful to stay hidden. During the summer the grass is tall enough to hide you well, but until then the area can be seen from the trail. While you're here take a walk around the paved trail. You can see all sorts of animals. It's worth your time!
