Apologies to fans of the song, (Jon Martyn does a superb rendition) but here is a little cache of loot stashed away at the southern end of Oxfords Port Meadow.
The location can be reached from 3 different directions, either The Trout PH car park at Godstow to the NW. The Perch PH car park at Binsey to the W (N51 45.920, W001 17.251). Or from the Walton Well car park to the E (N51 45.740, W001 16.467).
The Perch has a large enclosed garden and is ideal for those with younger families, but like the Trout, can get busy at times).
Recently renovated the bridge straddles the navigable section of the River Thames and can form part of an extended walk that can include The Matsons ‘Trout Trek’ cache further upstream. Port Meadow floods after prolonged rainfall so access to the caches lair could prove difficult, although you may have wellies on if you are tackling ‘The Trout Trek.’.The view from the bridge north over the flooded meadow is a must see, and you can imagine Morse surveying the scene of a drowned murder victim from here.
The bridge is well used so part of the trick here is to retrieve the cache in full view without evoking any suspicion from passers by. The cache is a black 35mm film canister, with a small log, (but no pencil), and coins of many denominations of which some are still in current usage. It cannot be seen, so you are going to have to put your hands in somewhere dark.
