"De la Melida" is one of the historic names for the island of Mljet - one of most beautiful nature resorts in the Adriatic. The cache is hidden near the highest peak in the area of the National Park ("Planjak") - but not the highest peak of the island.
From the top you'll get a great view of the National Park area, and the other parts of the island. You'll also see some devastated objects that remained after the Yougoslav army left the island during the sixties. The objects were used also during the recent war (early 90-ies), but only as an observation point - this teritorry was not under fights. The phone wire you might notice laying along the trail,
is cut in one place - so it's not in use.
The cache is a plastic fridge box (4,5x12x19 cm), with some things to help you stay clean and beautiful :). Sadly enough, the area around these abandoned objects is not as clean and beautiful as one would expect them to be - and yet, they call it a "National Park".
Nevertheless, try not to make it worse during your stay.
The cache is some 20 m off any trail, hidden quite well in a shady hole in a stone. Step carefully. If you encounter any snakes, they are harmless - the poisoneous ones are extinct from the island.
There is a good map of the national park area, available probably in shops and galleries in the port of Pomena. The map should help you decide where to start your hike - and you can have variations between 40 and 90 minutes to get there.
Make sure you know your ship connections with the island - depending on the season, an overnight stay might be required, but on the other hand, the island is worth spending at least 3 or 4 days hiking and snooping around.
