Geocache Description:

A jaunt around the village of Bonsall to find clues, then a trek up the hill to the cache.

The co-ordinates given are for the start of the trail. You'll need a pen and paper and a good head for figures, or a calculator! When we say the sum of the digits of the year we mean, for example, 1824 = 1 + 8 + 2 + 4 = 15. You won't need your GPS round the village as we thought this would make it too easy.

The co-ordinates for the cache are N53* A.B W001* C.D

A

First find T'Owd Man. You need the sum of the digits of the year he was removed.

Second, how many years did the Great War last?

Third, what is the sum of the digits of the year the drinking well was erected?

Add the first to the second, then subtract the third and the answer is A.

B

Walk down Yeoman Street.

First, how many marble pillars does the fountain have?

Second, how many years did the village hall stand before it was remodelled?

Third, how many years did George Moore live? If you can't find this maybe you'll have to wander about for a bit, and sit and ponder a while?

Add the first second and third together to find B.

C

Now up the stepped pathway to the church.

First, what's the difference between the dates on the gates at the church door?

Second, how many steps are there on the path up to the church? (You did count them on the way up, didn't you?!) It's the number to the top of the handrail you want. Ignore the two or three by the gate as we couldn’t decide if these were “steps” or not.

Third, find the “grave not to be reopened” (ooer!). (You can see it from a path – there’s no need to cross the graves.) On what day of the month did John die?

Add the second and third, then take the total away from the first, and you have C.

D

Leave the Churchyard by the gate at the top.

First, find the memorial to Robert Clay Esq. What is the sum of the digits of the year?

Second, follow the road down to a place you’ll recognise! Find the earliest date on the cross - there are three and you'll have to look hard - what's the sum of the digits of that year?

Third, what is the sum of the digits of the year on the King’s Head?

Fourth, what’s the difference between CK and LAK?

Here’s where it gets a bit tricky! Add the second and third together, then multiply the result by the fourth, then add the first and your answer’s D. Or it should be!

And then to the cache.... Either follow your GPS up the road until you see a footpath sign on the left. Or T’Owd Man will show you another way (but if you lose gps coverage that way, take a right at the end of the concreted path). Say hello to the Catstones on the way!
