Get lost with the Lost Colonists. This geocache is located on Hatteras Island in the N.C. Coastal Reserve known as Buxton Woods. The log book gives some history of this area known as Croatan to the Lost Colonists.
This cache is located off of N.C. Hwy 12 and would be of interest for those who have never seen a maritime forest. Heading south from the lighthouse on Hwy 12, look for the N.C. Coastal Reserve sign on your left (Flowers Ridge Rd.)This is a sand road, so park in the designated parking spots and hike in, unless you have a 4WD. Bring bug spray. Watch out for poison ivy. The hills in Buxton woods are ancient sand dunes now covered with large live oaks and pine trees. It is believed that the Lost Colonists of Roanoke Island retreated to this area of the Outer Banks, then known as Croatan. Legend has it that some of them settled with the Hatteras Native Americans and some island locals are descendents of these Native Americans. This cache contains a log notebook with pens and camera. Please take your picture with the cache. Items in the cache include a storybook of the Lost Colony, Native American beads, Old English playing cards, an issue of Coast magazine featuring the Lost Colony and a compass (in case your GPS batteries die and you don't want to join the colonists!) The cache is in a Rubber Maid container wrapped in a Native American plaid blanket.
