Geocache Description:

Along the Columbia River there are many beautiful spots with great views of the river and surrounding area. We hope that you enjoy the rock formations of the cliffs above you, the view to the east of the John Day Lock and Dam and Mount Hood to your west.

Hidden near a small town along the Columbia river, with a lot of history of it's own. Not officially on the Oregon Trail, but very close by. "Sufur", can you guess which town this is? Rufus spelled backwards is sufur? Coincidence? Beats me?

In 1884 Rufus C. Wallis From Tennesse arived in the area. The first name the town was given was Wallis Station in honor of Mr. Wallis who ran the ferry boat and a ware house and was considered the second largest wheat shipper on record. The early townsite consisted of approximately five acres which Wallis surveyed, platted and deeded to the city out of his homesteaded area in 1892.

During the flood of 1894 the population of this small town expanded. People from a small town named Grant west of Rufus were washed out and the majority of the citizens moved to Rufus.

Rufus' third major growth took place during the construction of John Day Dam during the years of 1959-1968.

Not much more than a bump in the road now, Rufus' population is approximately 317 people.

Have fun with this cache.
