Geocache Description:

Oregon Lighthouse Number Three - Yaquina Head. The cache is an ammo box at the base of a tree at the end of a gentle uphill walk.

There are nine of the most beautiful Lighthouses on the Oregon Coast. Most of these lighthouses were established between 1870 and 1896 by the U. S. Lighthouse Board. Ultimately the U.S. Coast Guard became the modern day light keepers and after the installation of automated beacons in the 1960’s they began to transfer ownership of the facilities to other government agencies. All nine of the Oregon lighthouses have been named to the National Register of Historic Places, seven of which are open for public inspection and regularly scheduled summer tours. Located just North of Newport near Agate Beach, the Yaquina head lighthouse began its service on August 20, 1873. The bright white light from the top of the 93’ tall tapered brick structure could be seen from the deck of a vessel at 19 nautical miles. The job as light keeper was not to be taken lightly. Work began one hour before sunset, when the light keeper climbed the 114 steps to the lantern and lit the four-wick lamp fueled by lard oil. This type of lamp took about one hour to heat up to its brightest light, so it would be ready at sunset. The light glowed through the French made First Order Freznel Lens, a masterpiece in itself. The light remains in service today with the original lens made in 1868. Electricity came to Yaquina Head in 1933. A 500 watt electric lamp replaced the kerosene lamp inside the giant lens. Later in 1939 a 1000 watt lamp was installed and at that point controls were added to change the characteristic from a fixed light to the current 2 second on, 2 second off, 2 second on, 14 second off pattern. This wonderfull location does have a day use fee of $5 per carload, and it is well worth it. The cache is at the end of a nice gentle uphill trail with a spectacular view. If you haven't tried letterboxing yet (www.letterboxing.org) you might look into it before doing this cache, there is a letterbox right on your path.
