Each year the East Bay Regional Park District holds an event known as the Trails Challenge. Park staff and volunteers write descriptions of their favorite trails, which are compiled into a booklet featuring the top 20 trails for that year (see www.ebrp.org).
In honor of the (then) 10-year anniversary of Trails Challenge, I placed caches on five of the featured trails.
The 2003 Lake Chabot Trail description was written by a mountain biker with fellow bikers in mind. Hikers will probably only want to complete part of it, or at least only part at a time. The lake is always beautiful. There is a self guided hike extending from the closest parking area to the area of the cache: get the guide book at the Lake Chabot Marina before you go. The closest parking area closes at 6:00 p.m. The trail is paved, but requires an uphill climb.
This cache is virtually on the trail. No need to bushwhack, trample plants, play in poison oak, or turn over any logs. Wait for a break in the foot and bike traffic before trying for the cache.
The cache is small, so bring only small items to trade. Pay attention to how the cache fits its hidey-hole when you remove it so that you can replace it easily.
