Welcome to the Prairie Lakes Unit of the Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area. There are three entrances to the WMA. The main entrance (Road 16) is located at N27 55.680 W81 07.367 on Canoe Creek Road. This entrance is sometimes closed during hunting season; if so, you can enter from N27 57.124 W81 08.418 (Road 5) on Canoe Creek Road. There is also a south entrance from Highway 60 at N27 46.704 W81 07.598. This road (Road 10) is less groomed and may hold standing water after a rain. In addition, a gate will block a portion of this road during the hunting season from early September until late April; it is a 3-mile hike from the gate to the cache. I highly recommend obtaining a map and brochure from any of the entrance kiosks. Alternatively, you can download a brochure here.
Hunting is allowed on this WMA. For a complete list of dates and regulations see the same site.
There is a daily use fee ($3 per person or $6 per vehicle). The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission requests that you use the honor system at the pay stations located at each of the 3 entrances. Through hikers on the Florida Trail, persons over 65, and persons younger than 12 are exempt from the daily fee. Parking for this cache is located on Road 16 at N27 54.424 W81 07.987. There are 2 loop trails in this section that connect to the Florida Trail. The cache is located on one of the loop trails. It should be easy to pick the correct loop once you reach the parking area. The cache is approximately 0.5 mile from the parking area. You can expect to get your feet wet if there has been recent rain.
The cache is a standard ammo can with the standard contents. The first finder is entitled to several pieces of gold coin.
There is much to see and do in this WMA. There is a boat ramp on Lake Jackson and several fishing spots along the main road and at the water control structure on the Lake Jackson canal. Camping is allowed in several locations, although permits must be obtained prior to your visit. Wildlife abounds in this area. I saw deer, turkeys, turtles, and bald eagles the day I placed this cache and whooping cranes are raised nearby for release into the wild.
