Geocache Description:

LOGGING REQUIREMENTS

• Email me the answers to both of the following questions:

1) According to the sign, how old was this person when they began work here, and in what year?

2) Go inside the schoolhouse. At the front of the room is something large and black and sadly covered in graffitti. Look closer- what material is it made out of?

A virtual cache located at an old schoolhouse in the Great Smoky Mountains NP. I created a virtual because traditional caches are not allowed on NPS land.

This virtual is located down a small, one lane road accessible from the Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area or from Hwy 321 in Wears Valley via a "secret entrance" to the park. During Summer, the road is open all the way to the site. In the Winter, you will have to hike in on the Metcalf Bottoms trail, which starts at the orange gate across the bridge from the picnic area. The hike should be no more than 0.6 miles each way; I would give it a terrain rating of about 2.5 stars if you go this route. Of course, if you wish you can hike the trail in the Summer too.

The coordinates will bring you to a new sign at the edge of the parking lot for this historic building. The sign was placed in memory of a very special woman who worked here as a volunteer for the park service. While I was never fortunate enough to meet her in person, I have talked to people who have described her as, "Nearly 100 and still sharp as a tack."

Enjoy the creek in back, or take a nearby old road farther into the woods. There is another building, an old cabin, accessible with about a 3 mile roundtrip hike.
