Geocache Description:

This cache is to be found in the East India Bird Sanctuary (part of the Lee Valley Park) near the point where the Lea River (both spellings are used) flows into the mighty Thames.

The East India Dock Basin was once a busy terminus for ships returning from India with spices and other precious cargoes. After years of disuse, it has now been partially filled-in on one side to make a new wetland area to attract and provide homes for a variety of geese, terns and coots to mention a few. Next to the inner lock gates, you will find one of the many Millennium Beacons used in the Millennium celebrations. Crossing over the footbridges atop the lock gates, you are treated to a panoramic view of the River Thames as it sweeps from Greenwich to Woolwich, with the dormant Millennium Dome centre stage on the far bank. There are three gated access points into the sanctuary and, whilst the opening times are unpublished, they are certainly open during the day during weekends and Bank Holidays. You can try checking with the Lee Valley Information Centre on 01992 702200. The sanctuary is easily reached by Underground (Canary Wharf on the Jubilee Line) and the Docklands Light Railway (East India on the Beckton Branch). This regular cache (a transparent & blue 1.2litre tupperware box) is hidden in a small copse next to a riverside public footpath used by locals, visitors and birdwatchers.
