Dravosburg Rainbow Orange Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is located on the hillside between upper and lower Dravosburg. The hill is walkable most areas, with a number of dirt roads and trails. But it is steep in places, so a bad route will up the ratings.
This is a themed cache. If possible trade out something orange or something that has orange on it. Note there are other color themed caches in the area (eventually every color of the rainbow will be represented).
The terrain rating is clear. The lower rating on difficulty applies to the search once you get to the general area.
There are a number of access points, but the small park (Bettis Road to Ridgeview to Riverview) in Dravosburg (access road at N 40 21.352 by W 079 53.426) is clearly public access and it is from this park that I rate the cache. There are trails and roads to within 30' of the cache site, but it certainly is not "line of site" - choose your path thoughtfully. You may find the last hill side more manageable 120’ from the cache site. You are looking for an ABS pipe that's capped on one end and has a screw top on the other end. It's 4" ID pipe, so consider this if you are planning to leave anything.
On the hill side near the cache there are a bunch of vines. Even on close examination, most will identify them as grape vines. But among the grape vines are also some hops vines. In August, the classic hops flowers are easy to find. Crush one and the aroma is definately of beer. I researched this a couple years back and found that this hillside was once the sight of a farm. During prohibition, the farmer supplied beer hops for the local underground brewers. When the coke gas lines were rebuilt (the big green pipes) the work crew dug up the area and chopped the hops rhizome into many pieces - some started new vines.
Near the cache is a simple wrench in case the top is too tight to get off by hand. Please grease the threads when you seal up the cache (a jar of petroleum jelly is in the cache) and screw the plug in only HAND tight.
Hints are given in two levels: #1 a general hint and #2 a specific hint.
