Sunset over Little Bay
photo: Big Dog, the Curly One & the Little Man
This is a four-part multi-cache that will bring you to four very
different sites in Dover. Be prepared to drive between each
waypoint. Could be done on a bike, but it would take a while! Bring
a calculator for some minor math.
Here are the instructions for each waypoint:
Waypoint 1
1. The coordinates posted above will start you right on Dover's
southeastern border...or over it (hint)! You are looking for a
strategically placed magnetic hide-a-key inside which you will find
the coordinates for the 2nd waypoint.
Waypoint 2
2. Your new coordinates will bring you to the grave of an
important leader in Dover history. His initials are T.R. Take the
year he was born and divide by 2. Now subtract 14 to find the
seconds for the next set of coordinates:
N 43° 11.***
W070° 52.446
Waypoint 3
3. The original sign has been removed, likely by vandals. Go to
the sign across the street and the same information can be found.
Here you'll find an informative sign that chronicles a dark day in
Dover history. Take the last three digits of the year
that it happened, subtracting 736 from this number to find the
north coordinate, and subtracting 55 from the same number to find
the west coordinate.
N 43º 08.***
W070º 50.***
Waypoint 4
4. The final cache is at the Bellamy River Sanctuary. From
Dover, take Rt. 108 to Back River Rd. (just past the entrance to
Spaulding Tpk.) to Bayview Rd. At the end of Bayview, just past a
stand of mature pines, bear left onto a gravel road and continue
through field to parking area.
Some good places for a time out: Dover Point Rd.(south of
town)--Newick's (excellent seafood), Tuttle's Red Barn (established
in 1632, it's America's oldest family-operated farm). Rt. 108
(center of town)--Cafe on the Corner (coffee and sandwiches), Thai
Cuisine (self-explanatory), Baldface Books (great selection of
new/used titles at low prices), Kelley's Row (Irish pub/restaurant
in the mill).
Good luck and have fun!
