Geocache Description:

Virtual cache at Fort Gorges, in the middle of Portland harbor. The fort was built after the war of 1812, but was never used, except for storage. Although the fort is very obvious from shore, it is seldom frequented by tourists because it requires a boat and is not on the ferry lines.

Very scenic fort, which can still be completely explored, with the exception of a few rooms with floors missing.

There are several water taxis in Portland that will take you out to the island, as long as it's within a few hours of high tide. At low tide, some boats will scrape bottom when docking at the wall by the fort.

We chose to explore this fort because it was wide open and explorable, as opposed to most of the other forts in Maine which have either been converted into something, a museum for instance, or are closed to the public. In a day and age where the general trend is to close places and restrict access for safety and liability reasons, it is exciting to see this fort still open and explorable. I sincerely hope that it remains that way.

To log this find, e-mail me with the answer to the following question: There is a plaque with a map at the posted coordinates, which is the center of the courtyard. What is the first name of the "port" shown on the map as the entrance to the fort?
